(Central News Agency, Nairobi, comprehensive foreign news report on the 27th) The Ugandan government said today that in order to prevent the spread of the Ebola virus, Uganda will immediately close its border with neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo. WHO Secretary-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus today called on warring parties in eastern Democratic Congo to immediately cease fire to prevent the epidemic. Reuters reported that Uganda’s top health official, Diana Atwine, told a press conference today that the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo will be closed for four weeks, except for the Ebola response team, humanitarian and security operations, food transport and freight. He also stated that anyone who has been approved to enter Uganda from the Democratic Republic of the Congo must undergo a 21-day compulsory self-quarantine. The Ugandan government last week announced a series of preliminary measures, including suspending mass transport services with the Democratic Republic of Congo, in an attempt to curb the spread of the virus across the border. The epicenter of the epidemic is in Ituri province in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Uganda has reported seven Ebola cases and one death. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified this rare outbreak of Bundibugyo Ebola as a “Public Health Emergency of International Concern” (PHEIC). So far, more than 900 suspected cases and more than 200 suspected deaths have been reported in eastern Democratic Congo. These cases are distributed in three provinces, including North Kivu, controlled by the rebel “March 23 Movement” (M23), and South Kivu, controlled by the rebel group “Alliance Fleuve Congo”. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called for a ceasefire in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo today, saying the ongoing fighting has displaced large numbers of people and allowed the epidemic to spread in crowded camps.
