(Central News Agency file photo) (Central News Agency reporter Guo Fangjun, Geneva, 18th) In the 2026 world competitiveness rankings released by the Swiss Institute of Management in Lausanne (IMD), Singapore ranked first, followed by Hong Kong, and Switzerland third. Taiwan, relying on its strong GDP and export growth and the advantages of institutional stability in the past 10 years, rose to fourth in the world this year, its best performance since its inclusion in the ranking. The IMD World Competitiveness Ranking is an important indicator of global industry, government, and academia. It evaluates 70 economies around the world in four major aspects: economic performance, government effectiveness, corporate effectiveness, and infrastructure. The 2026 world competitiveness rankings released on the 18th showed that as geopolitical tensions intensify, strong institutions and the ability to cope with fluctuations and absorb shocks are crucial to economic success. Relying on its strong gross domestic product (GDP) and export growth, Taiwan has made significant progress in all four major competitiveness aspects and maintained stable levels, making the world competitiveness ranking jump from 6th last year to 4th in the world, its best performance since it was included in the ranking. Wang Siwei, Taiwan’s representative in Switzerland, told the Central News Agency that the return of Taiwanese businessmen, talents, and capital, the production momentum driven by manufacturing, R&D, and recent AI. Taiwan is currently cooperating with the world’s top companies. Various positive factors have pushed Taiwan forward. The good ranking in this year’s competition is the collective result of the joint efforts of the government and the people over the past 10 years. According to the report analysis, Singapore, which ranks first, is mainly due to its business efficiency, which has made it jump from second place in 2025 to first place, returning to the top position in 2024. This also highlights the importance of a flexible economy that can quickly resume growth. Hong Kong continues its three-year improvement trend and ranks second this year. The rise in ranking reflects its continued performance in four competitiveness indicators: government efficiency, infrastructure, economic performance and business efficiency. Government efficiency remains its most important competitive advantage, ranking second for the second consecutive year. Last year’s top ranking, Switzerland, fell to third place, mainly due to the deterioration of foreign direct investment, showing that even strong economies are not immune to geopolitical and investment shocks. At the same time, high living and operating costs continue to affect businesses, employment performance has also weakened, and the employment rate has declined in line with the long-term growth trend. Arturo Bris, director of the World Competitiveness Center, said at a press conference that as the geopolitical situation worsens and global divisions deepen, countries with mature legal systems and credible systems will show greater advantages. This type of institutional foundation helps business activities continue to function normally when the international system cannot effectively meet needs. According to the analysis of the report, competitiveness in 2026 will no longer depend mainly on cost, scale or even innovation, but on the credibility of the system. The more fragmented the world becomes, the more important it becomes for predictable rules, enforceable commitments and legitimate state capabilities. After Taiwan, the United Arab Emirates ranks fifth thanks to high job growth and long-term investment. The following rankings are Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden and the United States.
