(Central News Agency, Colombo, comprehensive foreign news report on the 6th) Sri Lankan officials said today that a conflict broke out in a prison in the country, killing 23 people, including 4 prison guards, and injuring more than 100 people, making it the country’s deadliest prison riot in more than five years. Agence France-Presse reported that police said that prisoners from two drug gangs clashed overnight at the main prison in Negombo region, and the injured were rushed to Negombo Hospital. The hospital director said that there are currently 23 bodies in the hospital, and more than 100 injured prisoners and prison guards are being treated. Some have gunshot wounds, while others have knife wounds and severe bruises. A fight began last night at Nagobo Prison, which houses thousands of inmates, according to officials. As news of the brawl spread inside the prison, female inmates from nearby areas climbed onto rooftops to demand their release. Police said part of the roof collapsed, injuring some female inmates. Police commandos were called to the scene today but were not deployed inside the prison. A large number of prisoners’ relatives gathered outside the prison, while the Air Force deployed drones and a helicopter to monitor the situation. In December 2020, a riot broke out in another prison in Sri Lanka at the peak of the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) epidemic, killing 11 inmates, injuring 117 others, and causing the government to release hundreds of inmates from overcrowded prisons. Official data shows that as of yesterday, a total of 41,250 people were held in prisons across Sri Lanka, which was about four times the original capacity.
