(Central News Agency, Washington, 5th Comprehensive Foreign News Report) A senior U.S. official said today that President Trump will meet with Ukrainian President Zelensky during the North Atlantic Treaty Organization summit in Turkey this week to continue his efforts to end the war in Ukraine. Reuters reported that Trump is scheduled to arrive at the summit on the 7th and will first meet with the host, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The White House said Trump will also meet with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and hold a press conference. In response to this trip, senior officials who did not want to be named pointed out in a briefing to the media that Trump will meet with Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the 8th to discuss “how we can end the war.” The official said: “The situation on the battlefield has obviously stalled in the past few months, and neither side has made much progress. The president has a strong sense of urgency to stop the war as soon as possible.” The official also said that Trump will also urge North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) allies to increase defense spending, and “he will personally convey this message.” The official noted that defense-related deals worth billions of dollars would be announced during the summit, but did not disclose details. European officials said they hoped Trump’s good relationship with Erdogan and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte would ensure a smooth summit. European countries remain uneasy as transatlantic relations have been strained by the war with Iran and Trump’s frequent criticism of NATO. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov publicly stated yesterday that Trump had a 90-minute phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin and offered to help find a solution to the war in Ukraine. The senior U.S. official said Trump may have further contact with Putin after his meeting with Zelensky. Zelensky last month called for a one-on-one meeting with Putin, but the Kremlin leader rejected it. Russia says any solution must include Moscow taking full control of the Donbas region, a claim Ukraine rejects.
